Here are three groups in the DC area available to support practicing mindfulness with your family and children. These groups are not affiliated Circle Yoga or the Budding Yogis program so please contact them directly with questions.
1) The Capitol Hill Family Mindfulness group is based on Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings and uses his latest Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children book for family mindfulness activities. Some of these are children-led and include helping families return to the present moment, celebrate children’s perceptions and play. We meet the 1st Sunday of each month on Capitol Hill from 10am-noon. Please feel welcome to gather with your children, aged 5-12, for a monthly gathering in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh: 323 11th St, NE. Washington DC (15 minute walk from Union Station and Eastern Market with street parking). Contact: Jindra at email@example.com and 202-375-3119 or RuthCarol Touhey at firstname.lastname@example.org 202-546-2614. There is a yahoo group for communication (please email Jindracekan@gmail.com to sign up): CapHillBuddhFamMindfulness.
2) The DC_Buddhist_Family_Mindfulness Yahoo Group is mainly composed of Northwest DC families that Varun Gauri from IMCW and Jindra Cekan began two years ago and across both of our traditions. In the last 6 months we’ve been mainly merged with the Unitarian Church’s Buddhist Mindfulness group, although we still do separate activities, e.g. Vesak, a recent invitation to a vipassana monk who concentrates on children’s mindfulness etc.
3) The River Road Unitarian Church’s Buddhist Family Mindfulness practice. Led by Ofosu and Jen, lovely IMCW teachers, this is a wonderful and ongoing source of watering the seeds of family mindfulness. Description at Children and Family Mindfulness . The contact information for this lively and informative dharma sharing group is: River Road Unitarian Church’s Buddhist Family Mindfulness: the 3rd or 4th Sunday in the month, 3:15-4PM for children 5-11 years young and 4:15-5PM for teens 12-17
