About the Therapist
Joey Gottlieb (DCLMT#2171) is a licensed massage therapist and yoga teacher. A “third culture kid,” Joey spent his childhood between the Washington area and several African countries. He discovered yoga and mind-body-spirit wellness while studying anthropology and philosophy in college. In 2014, he decided to enroll at the rigorous Maui School of Therapeutic Massage in Hawai’i, graduating in 2016.
As a massage therapist, Joey uses a combination of modalities for maximum therapeutic benefit. Swedish massage, Craniosacral, and Eastern energetic modalities are used to relax the nervous system and bring nutrients to tired tissues. Anatomically precise techniques such as Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular Therapy and Myofascial Release are then applied to release tight muscles and address structural imbalances. The common thread through all of Joey’s work, however, is the flowing Lomi Lomi he learned from his kumu (teacher) on Maui.
About the Techniques
Lomi Lomi – This flowing form of bodywork, native to the Hawaiian Islands, mimics the beautiful waters and geography of Hawaii. Both physical and energetic, this unique form of bodywork uses contoured touch with soft forearms to gently open the body while working down to the deepest layers of tissue. The body’s energies are harmonized through the use of oli (chant) and kawele (energy clearing).
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) – Also known as trigger point therapy, NMT uses precise anatomical knowledge to systematically release problematic tight muscles. Thorough warming is used to prepare the tissue for deep, specific strokes and holds. NMT also uses anatomical assessments to hone in on specific muscles, and effective contraction and stretching exercises are also used to enhance the treatment.
