The 48-hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training is designed for yoga teachers and yoga practitioners who seek to enhance their teaching or personal practice by touching upon (t)issues rarely worked in more dynamic “yang” yoga styles.
All forms of yoga can be said to explore polarities — feminine and masculine, muscular and organic, Shiva and Shakti, ida and pingala — in order to arrive at an integrated sense of self. Yin Yoga is a quiet practice in which we hold poses that focus on the parts of our bodies thickest with connective tissue, generally from the knees to the solar plexus. This passive holding in seated and supine positions helps create a safe and positive biomechanical stress on the deep layers of fascia, which gently increases the pliancy of our joints within our natural range of motion.
The connective tissue is also the home base for the meridians, which are theorized to be liquid crystal pathways made up of hyaluronic acid molecules. Yin Yoga increases the strength and magnetic pull of these meridians, which can help increase the amount of chi in the system, or better distribute it, or allow it to be more fully absorbed by the body.
Yin Yoga also naturally draws the mind inward into a relaxed and reflective state, where awareness can be brought to postural, breath, and thought patterns.
Best of all, Yin Yoga is accessible and beneficial for a wide variety of people in all stages of life — from yoga neophytes to seasoned athletes, from sedentary office workers to those recovering from injuries.
The Yin Yoga Teacher Training includes 48 hours of in-person training with Yael Flusberg, reading and homework assignments, a workbook, and a certificate of completion. The training is designed for yoga teachers and yoga practitioners with at least two years of experience. RYTs who complete the course are eligible to apply for CEUs with Yoga Alliance.

Recommended Reading: Your Body, Your Yoga, by Bernie Clark, with a foreword by Paul Grilley. This is the single best book that explains anatomical variation and why it’s so important to teaching any style of yoga.
Course Topics and Sequence
March 23-25: Yin & the Physical Body
with special guest Dr. Michelle Deslauriers, DPT
- Learn the difference between Yin and Yang styles of Yoga and the Yin approach and how to balance the need for both (including when to take a yin approach in yang poses and a yang approach in yin poses).
- See anatomy from the perspective of joints and fascia, including plasticity vs. elasticity of tissues; the importance of skeletal variation and natural range of motion; proportion and orientation; and the difference between compression and tension. Dr. Michelle Deslauriers, Doctor of Physical Therapy will join the group for this presentation.
- Review Paul Grilley’s Theory of Exercise (or: is this pose good for me?)
- Learn the basic principles of Yin Yoga (with an appearance by Goldilocks).
- Practice/teach the most common yin yoga poses – including how to modify (what teacher Bernie Clark calls “Your Body Your Yoga!”) and work with injuries.
April 27-29: Yin & The Energetic Body
with special guest Dr. Deirdre Orceyre, naturopathic physician and acupuncturist
- Reflect on what energy is and how it moves, gets obstructed, and how both yin and yang yoga relate to energetic flows. (Hint: it’s the gunas!)
- Learn Energetic Anatomy from Taoist and Ayurvedic points of view. We’ll review the main yin meridians, Modern Meridian Theory and how acupuncture meridians relate to fascial meridians (Anatomy Trains). You’ll also deepen your understanding of how yogis view energy: including the koshas, chakras, and elements, doshas and mudras).
June 1-3: Yin and the Psycho-Spiritual Body
- Review the neurophysiology of stress, trauma and resiliency and how this can guide you to create a Yin environment for yourself and your students
- Explore different ways to integrate mindfulness and resiliency tools into a Yin practice.
- Discover Yin teaching methodology including the art of assisting in a Yin class (where you may be dealing with beginning and seasoned students with a range of physical and psychological concerns).
- Explore many ways to sequence a Yin practice, including combining Yin with Yang.
- Understand the role of a yin teacher (teaching philosophy, facilitation skills, use of touch, voice, personal practice, ethics).
Fees and Registration
The fee for Yin Yoga Teacher Training is $960, payable as follows:
- $100 due upon registration to secure your space (This payment includes a $50 non-refundable deposit.)
- $430 due Monday, January 15, 2018
- $430 due Friday, March 16, 2018
Registrants who withdraw from the training before December 31, 2017 will receive a refund of $50.
Registrants who withdraw from the training between January 15, 2018 and March 16, 2018 will receive a refund of $280.
No refunds after March 16, 2018.

Instructor and Guest Teachers
Yael loves delving deeply into what heals us, what helps build our resiliency, and what allows us to be courageous and active agents in our communities. To that end, she fell in love with yin yoga, studying with Paul Grilley, credited with creating Yin Yoga and an expert in functional anatomy; Sarah Powers, who popularized Yin Yoga by integrating it with both mindfulness and Taoist meridians; and most recently Biff Mithoefer, who incorporates storytelling and shamanic teachings into his work. In addition to a decade of teaching yin, Yael is an Integrative Yoga Therapist and offers therapeutic group and one-on-one sessions in the clinical setting. The course will draw from materials and concepts culled from these teachings, as well as Yael’s studies in biofeedback, Reiki, polarity therapy, and poetry. Michelle Deslauriers is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist and licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy who focuses on restorative and holistic health in helping patients heal from pain and discomfort without medicine, surgery and medical procedures. She is committed to patient-centered care and education, and uses a variety of hands-on techniques focusing on the fascia, including Integrative Manual Therapy® and myofascial release. Dr. Deirdre Orceyre is a Board certified naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist who earned a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine from the National College Natural Medicine, a leading institution in natural health education. Following her medical training, Dr. Orceyre participated full-time two-year residency focusing on internal naturopathic medicine, with special rotations in women’s health, endocrinology and integrative cancer care. Described by her patients as knowledgeable, patient and compassionate, her goal is to work with patients regardless of condition to determine the causes of their imbalance. Dr. Orceyre sees herself as a guide and a coach, with the patient being the true healer. She is a gifted teacher, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University.
