Reiki is a subtle healing practice that eases stress, is balancing to the system, and engages the body’s natural capacity to heal. The word healing comes from the Old English word haelen, which means “to make whole; harmony of mind, body and spirit.” Reiki healing practice originated in Japan in the 1920’s and now, almost 100 years later, is offered in healthcare settings, military medical centers, yoga studios, wellness centers, hospices, and private practices and homes around the world.
In a Reiki healing session, you lie on a treatment table, fully clothed, while the practitioner rests her hands lightly on or just above your body in a sequence of placements. Once placed, the hands are still. Quite quickly you may shift into a quiet state of ease as your muscles release and your mind settles. A Reiki session offers the body a chance to rest and self-heal, and the mind an opportunity to experience a sense of peace and spaciousness. Reiki practice is meditative and non-invasive; it is safe for anyone at any age, and any level of health. There are no known side effects or contraindications. Reiki healing supports but does not replace conventional medical treatment.
Individuals who are interested in learning a simple self-care practice enjoy learning Reiki at the beginning level. A First Degree Reiki weekend experience teaches you all you need to know to begin a daily self-Reiki home practice. Practicing self-Reiki for 10-20 minutes each day helps you maintain a sense of balance and well-being. First Degree Reiki students also learn to practice Reiki informally on family members and friends.
The benefits of Reiki practice are unique to each individual, helping a person find balance in whatever way is needed. Individuals receiving Reiki treatments and/or practicing self-Reiki have reported such benefits as an easing of anxiety and stress; more restful sleep; help with managing headaches and pain; better digestion; and improved concentration and self-confidence. The effects of Reiki practice are cumulative, deepening over time.
My particular areas of interest in teaching Reiki and offering Reiki treatments include: helping individuals manage anxiety and stress; treating individuals pre and post surgery, (often reducing the need for pain medication and shortening hospital stays); supporting individuals with cancer and other health challenges; and helping individuals navigate the aging process with curiosity, compassion and grace.
Marion offers Reiki healing instruction, training and workshops at Circle Yoga Cooperative. She offers individual Reiki healing treatments and consultations by appointment at her studio nearby in Maryland.

Reiki Practitioner, Marion Werner
Marion has been practicing Reiki and Healing Touch for over 20 years. She is a Reiki Master/Teacher, receiving her training from Claudia Jones, Reiki Master and Wellness Director at Yoga Thailand in Koh Samui, Thailand. She studied “Reiki in Medicine” with Reiki Master and author, Pamela Miles. Marion is a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner through Healing Touch International. She completed professional training in mind-body practices at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington D.C. and the Mind-Body Medicine Program at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Marion completed “A Year of Mindfulness” with Annie Mahon at Circle Yoga, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. She has a Masters in Education.
