A Weekend with Jenni Rawlings

Jenni Rawlings

Jenni Rawlings is coming to Circle Yoga!

Friday, Apr 12 - Sunday, Apr 14, 2019
at the Chevy Chase Village Hall

Join Jenni Rawlings for a weekend of workshops to learn more about the body and how it moves when we practice yoga. We'll explore important insights from movement science, and how they apply to our practice and teaching. We'll even uncover some surprising evidence that challenges what many yoga teachers and students have learned about stretching and strengthening the body.

Each 3-hour session will begin with a lecture and move into a yoga practice that incorporates the information and principles discussed in the lecture. The weekend is geared toward yoga teachers and inquisitive yoga students who are interested in digging into anatomy and biomechanics. The yoga practices offered are designed to be all levels, though are most appropriate for students who are comfortable in Level 1 yoga classes and above.

Friday, Apr 12, 6-9pm
Foundational Concepts + Whole Body Practice
This workshop will cover foundational movement science insights that matter for our yoga practice and teaching. Topics will include alignment, joint health, movement variety, and much more. Together, we will un-learn some traditional ideas about the human body and replace them with updated insights based on current research in exercise science.

Saturday, Apr 13, 9:30-12:30pm
Strong, Flexible Shoulders
We ask a lot of our shoulders in yoga, but we're not often taught the best ways to prepare our body for these demands. In this workshop, we'll learn about the anatomy and mechanics of the shoulder joint complex and discuss strategies for creating resilient shoulders that move well—both on and off the yoga mat.

Saturday, Apr 13, 2:00-5:00pm
Connect to Your Core
The core is a frequently used term with a wide variety of definitions. In this workshop, we'll hone in on a definition that makes sense for yoga and movement teachers through examining the anatomy and mechanics of the vertebral column. We'll also look at breathing, habitual movement patterns of the spine, and strategies for loading and strengthening the core.

Sunday, Apr 14, 9:30-12:30pm
Smart Hip-Opening
In this workshop, we will explore the term hip-opening, learn about the anatomy and mechanics of the hip joint, and discuss movement science-based approaches to creating healthy hips in yoga. You will leave this session with a clearer connection to your hips and a fresh perspective on approaching hip-opening in asana.

Sunday, Apr 14, 2:00-5:00pm
Yoga, Movement & The Nervous System
The nervous system plays the most important role in how we move and experience our body, but its significance is often overlooked. In this workshop, we'll learn about the anatomy and function of the nervous system, muscle contractions, and how movement works. This session will also include an introduction to pain science for yoga students and teachers.
